Choosing An RFID Card Reader – A Guide

Plastic Card Printers

There are a wide range of benefits to introducing RFID card readers to your workplace, from tracking supply chains to identifying missing goods and much more. In order to decide which RFID card reader is best for your business, you will need to consider its application. This guide will explore what RFID card readers do and how you can go about selecting the right one for you.

What is RFID?

RFID – short for radio frequency identification, is a wireless radio frequency technology that communicates by transferring data. RFID systems are usually paired with an RFID reader, tag or antenna to relay the information. For example, if you scan your ID card to enter a room against a reader, the encoded information within the card will be sent wirelessly to the reader, which will decide whether you have access to enter.

How Do They Work?

RFID scanners work similar to barcodes. They recognise radio frequencies storing and collecting data. RFID systems consist of three main components; an antenna, receiver and transponder. Once the scanning antenna and transceiver are combined they are referred to as the RFID reader.

There are two main types of readers:

  • Fixed Readers
  • Mobile Readers

RFID readers can be network connected devices. They use radio frequencies to transmit signals to activate the tag. Once you activate the reader , the tag will send information to the antenna. This is then translated into physical data.
